Art I
This course is the foundation of the fine arts curriculum. You will learn about a wide range of artistic techniques and materials from drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture through hands on projects. You will learn new ways to discuss and critique art. All while exploring art movements from around the world and throughout history. Art II Do you want to build on what you learned in Art 1? Students in Art 2 will refine their individual art skills in drawing techniques, realistic and abstract, color theory, perspective, painting and journal work. Students will continue to learn from art history and featured artists. Drawing & Design This course explores a variety of drawing materials and techniques while building upon your understanding of the Principles of Design. Painting I Are you interested or curious how to paint? In Painting you’ll explore and learn concepts and techniques. Students will be introduced to basic control of tools, methods of paint application, color mixing and preparation of the painting surface, as well as presenting their finished work. Painting II This course further develops skills and concepts from Painting 1. Advanced Art This course is meant to help you refine your artistic skills while pursuing self-directed technique exploration and projects. The goal of this class is to create and build an individualized artistic portfolio. AP Art History Do you want to learn about the “visual evidence” that was left behind and defined cultures and historical time periods? You’ll learn about architecture, sculpture, paintings and other forms of art from Stone Age to Current times. Former Students have expressed the benefits of how the artwork and studies overlapped with other courses. Please email any questions to Ms. Fulcher at [email protected] AP Studio Art 2D This course is intended to help you explore topics and techniques in 2-D art while building a portfolio for submission to the AP Board. AP Studio Art 3D This course is intended to help you explore topics and techniques in 3-D art while building a portfolio for submission to the AP Board. AP Studio Art/Drawing This course is intended to help you explore topics and techniques in studio art/drawing while building a portfolio for submission to the AP Board. Ceramics I Are you interested in working with clay and 3-Dimensional Art? Students will learn the history of ceramics, basic hand-building and sculptural techniques, glaze theory and techniques. Students will make pinch pots, coil pots, sculpture, slab houses, and more. Students will learn about 3-D artists, potters and the process of firing their work in the kiln. Ceramics II Builds on Ceramics 1 skills and concepts with introduction to the pottery wheel. Ceramics III Students work on independent assignments further developing Cer 2 skills and concepts Sculpture If you like 3-Dimensional art and sculptures, this is the class for you! You’ll learn how to use many different materials and recyclables to create new and interesting sculptures. Students will explore artists/sculptors and how sculpture developed through different cultures and time periods in art history. Photography I Do you want to learn the secret to taking eye catching photographs? This course covers the basics of what makes a good photo, ways to talk about and critique photos, and different techniques and materials of photography. You will learn the basics of digital photo manipulation as well as 35 mm film darkroom photography. Photography II This course expands upon the techniques learned in Photo 1 while introducing new photographic processes and materials. Photography III This course is intended for photography students to pursue techniques on an independent basis while building their artistic portfolio. Digital Media Production I Learn the process of making video and media! Digital is a project-based course that will teach you the basics of creating and analyzing video and various media. Projects we create in class are music videos, short films, music videos, graphics, sound/music production, commercials, and animation. Digital Media Production II This course focuses on learning more advanced editing software and complete advanced video, graphics, and sound projects, including projects of the student’s choice and our Westlake announcements show. Digital Media Production III (Honors) Students in this class are the directors, producers, and creators of our morning announcements as well as get to work on advanced projects throughout the year of their choosing or for our Westlake community. Theatre Arts In this course, students will be introduced to the many ways theatre influences their lives. Theatre Arts is a performance-based class where students will learn about acting, directing, technical theatre, script/play writing, improvisation, public speaking and communication, theatre history, musical theatre, and other forms of “modern” entertainment. Just to name a few things. Students will learn basic performance skills that can be used in other class or events outside of the Theatre classroom. Acting In this course, students will begin to focus on their acting skills. Learning different acting techniques and methods, audition/interview skills, beginner directing, playwriting, more advanced improvisation skills. Students in this class will perform in a class production and are required to audition for the after-school productions. Advanced Acting I-H This course picks up where Acting left off and adds more advanced techniques. It is required that students audition for after-school productions and take leadership roles in these productions. Advanced Acting II-H This course picks up where Advanced Acting I left off and adds advanced levels of directing, as well as acting methods. Students in this course will have the opportunity to direct their peers and are expected to audition for after-school productions and take leadership roles in these productions. Stage Production I In this course, students focus on the technical aspects of theatre. Students will learn about design, how to use basic tools for construction, lighting and sound equipment, set building, props and costumes, basic theatre make-up, and business. Students in the course will be expected to assist with the after-school productions. Stage Production II This course picks up where Stage Production left off and adds more advanced techniques. These students are expected to participate in the after-school productions and take leadership roles in these productions. These students begin the process of being trained in stage management. Stage Production III This course continues from Stage Production II. These students are the stage managers for the school year and are expected to participate in the after-school productions as designers and other leadership roles in these productions. Concert Choir I, II, III These courses are designed to help young women develop their vocal abilities. These classes will cover a variety of styles of music including pop, folk, and classical music. After-school rehearsals and public performances outside of the regular school day are a crucial component of these courses. Formal concert attire is a requirement for these classes. Treble Choir I This course is designed to help young women develop their vocal abilities. These classes will cover a variety of styles of music including pop, folk, and classical music. After-school rehearsals and public performances outside of the regular school day are a crucial component of these courses. Formal concert attire is a requirement for these classes. Bass Choir I, II, III, IV These courses are designed to help young men develop their vocal abilities. These classes will cover a variety of styles of music including pop, folk, and classical music.
